Using a privacy pin on your SMETS2 smart meter

If your smart meter lives in a communal meter cupboard or meter area, you can set a 4-digit privacy pin to keep your meter reading for your eyes only.

Setting up a privacy pin

First, decide on a 4 digit pin – it could be a memorable year, your birth year backwards or the last four digits of a loved one's phone number. It’s up to you – just make it tricky for someone else to guess.

It’s possible to use a different pin for electricity and gas meters (if you have both), or you can use the same pin. Here’s how to set it for each meter.

For your electricity smart meter:

Press the “B” button to cycle through the menu options until you see ‘Privacy PIN Menu”. Then press “A” twice.

To set your pin, press “A” to cycle through digits from 1 to 9. Press “B” to move to the next digit.
Once you’ve entered the 4th digit, press and hold “B” to confirm the pin. That’s it!

For your gas meter:

Press any button to wake up your gas meter, then press “C” to enter the menu.

Use “A” or “B” to scroll through the menu and select ‘User Settings’ by pressing “C”.

Scroll to ‘PIN CODE’ by pressing “B” and then press “C” to enter. The screen will display ‘INACTIVE’ if no pin is set. Press “C” and then “B” to confirm pin set up.

To set your pin, press “A” to cycle through digits from 1 to 9. Press “B” to move to the next digit.
Once you’ve entered the 4th digit, the meter will automatically save the pin.

Removing a privacy pin

Want to remove your privacy pin? Here’s how.

For your electricity smart meter:

Press the “B” button to cycle through the menu options until you see ‘Privacy PIN Menu”. Then press “A”, and scroll to ‘Disable Privacy Pin’.

The screen will display ‘ACTIVE’ if a privacy pin is set. Press “C” and then “B” to disable the pin.
